Bringing a Friend from Perlis for a Walk in Johor Bahru City Centre (Near Singapore)

On 8 July 2025, a friend of mine from the northernmost state of Peninsular Malaysia – Perlis – came to Johor Bahru for work. As a host from the southernmost tip of the peninsula, I didn’t miss the chance to bring him for a quick sightseeing tour around the ever-developing and modernising city of Johor Bahru.
Early in the morning at 7am, I picked him up and drove straight into the city centre via Jalan Ibrahim. From there, we could clearly see Singapore across the causeway – a unique and impressive sight.
We passed by R&F Mall, admiring the iconic RTS (Rapid Transit System) project that is nearing completion – an important future link between Johor Bahru and Singapore. We made a quick stop at Stulang Laut to take photos with the backdrop of the towering RTS bridge and the Tebrau Strait, while enjoying the cool morning breeze.

Next, we turned back onto Jalan Wong Ah Fook, a main road that has been beautifully upgraded alongside the Sungai Segget beautification project. We passed historic buildings like Broadway, City Square, Komtar JBCC, Holiday Inn, The Five Hotel, and continued into Jalan Trus.
Along Jalan Trus, we saw the Persada Johor International Convention Centre, Johor Ancient Temple, a Sikh temple, a Hindu temple, and Kotaraya Shopping Centre.
After that, I parked the car at the start of Jalan Wong Ah Fook, next to CIMB Bank, and we began walking from one end to the other. Then we turned left into Jalan Trus, walking from one end to the other again.
My friend was thrilled – he said he had never walked this far in the city before, let alone while sweating and laughing! We chatted about Johor’s history, old buildings, and the city’s transformation over the years.
Finally, we stopped for breakfast at Hua Mui Coffee Shop – a famous coffee shop known to be a favourite of one of the country’s top leaders. Toast, half-boiled eggs, and classic coffee were the perfect ending to a memorable morning.
