My DurianBB Academy Experience – One of Malaysia’s Most Unique Durian Edutourism Attractions

When I attended the MITA (Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association) Annual General Meeting in Kuala Lumpur on 25 June 2026,

I witnessed an exciting milestone as DurianBB and MITA officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote Malaysia’s tourism industry together.

The following day, thanks to the kind arrangement by MITA President Mint Leong, my wife and I had the wonderful opportunity to personally experience the famous DurianBB Academy in Seri Kembangan, Selangor.

I thought it would simply be another durian farm visit.

I was completely wrong.

It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and educational Durian Edutourism experiences I have ever joined.

More Than Just Eating Durian

Many people think visiting a durian farm means eating as many durians as possible.

At DurianBB Academy, the experience begins long before tasting the fruit.

Our friendly and professional guide warmly welcomed every participant before giving us a detailed introduction to the fascinating world of Malaysian durians.

Before entering the orchard, everyone was fully equipped with a sun hat, mosquito repellent and a traditional basket for collecting durians.

It immediately made us feel like real durian farmers!

Walking Through a Real Durian Orchard

One of the most exciting moments was walking among the towering durian trees.

Seeing hundreds of durians hanging naturally on the branches was something photos simply cannot fully capture.

Some fruits were hanging surprisingly low, allowing visitors to stand beside them, take memorable photographs and appreciate the beauty of the “King of Fruits” up close.

This alone made the trip worthwhile.

I Finally Understood What D197 Really Means

One interesting lesson I learned was about the codes used for Malaysian durian varieties.

For many years I thought numbers like D197 were simply names chosen by farmers.

In fact, these are official cultivar registration numbers assigned by the Department of Agriculture Malaysia.

For example, the world-famous Musang King is officially registered as D197, while many other famous varieties such as D24 and D200 also have their own registered cultivar numbers.

Learning these stories behind Malaysia’s premium durians made me appreciate the fruit even more.

Picking Durian Was Surprisingly Fun

The highlight of the tour was definitely collecting freshly fallen durians.

Carrying our baskets through the orchard while searching for newly fallen fruits felt like a treasure hunt.

Every time someone spotted a durian, everyone became excited.

Picking it up, placing it carefully into the basket and carrying it back gave us a completely different appreciation for the hard work behind every premium durian.

I couldn’t stop smiling throughout the experience.

The two-hour programme passed by so quickly because every moment was filled with learning, laughter and unforgettable memories.

What impressed me most about DurianBB Academy was that it is much more than a place to enjoy durians. It offers visitors an opportunity to learn, explore and appreciate Malaysia’s rich durian heritage through a well-designed and engaging edutourism experience.
