A Lucky City Exploration: Johor Bahru Half-Day Walking Tour – Part 1

Johor Bahru Half-Day Walking Tour

Today, we embarked on a lucky city exploration in Johor Bahru! At 7:00 AM, I met with Abel Nelson Nang, Director of Marketing at SKS Hospitality Group, and we started our walking tour from Fives Hotel Jalan Wong Ah Fook Johor Bahru, eager to discover the city’s culture and cuisine.

The sky was cloudy, and a light drizzle began, but as soon as we set off, the rain stopped! It was a perfect start to our journey.

Exploring Jalan Wong Ah Fook: A Walk Through Johor Bahru’s Heart

Starting at the end of Jalan Wong Ah Fook, we walked along this historic street. Directly opposite stood Komtar JBCC Mall, and as we continued, we passed a beautifully landscaped section of Sungai Segget. In some areas, the river had been transformed into an artificial waterway filled with fish, adding charm to the urban landscape.

Highlights Along the Way:
Johor Bahru City Square – One of the city’s top shopping malls
Sikh Temple & Hindu Temple – A testament to Johor Bahru’s multicultural heritage
Broadway Theatre Building – A historical cinema with nostalgic charm
Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim – A colonial-era landmark
Sungai Segget Signboard – A must-visit photo spot in Johor Bahru!

At this point, don’t forget to take a photo with the “Wong Ah Fook & Sungai Segget” sign as proof that you’ve visited Johor Bahru’s city center!

A Rainy but Cozy Breakfast at Kim Wah Coffee Shop

Before continuing our journey, we turned into Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, a street rich in history and culture. As we arrived at Kim Wah Coffee Shop, something amazing happened—the rain started falling again!

Seated comfortably, we enjoyed a classic Malaysian breakfast:
A cup of hot coffee
🥚 Two half-boiled eggs
🍞 Two slices of toasted bread
🍘 Two pieces of traditional “shui kueh” (steamed rice cakes)

The rhythmic sound of the rain, the aroma of coffee, and the lively chatter in the coffee shop created a cozy and unforgettable atmosphere.

The Rain Stops Again—Time to Continue Walking!

As we finished breakfast and rested for a while, the rain stopped once again! We resumed our walk along Jalan Trus, passing through:
Jalan Dhoby – A charming old street
Kotaraya Shopping Complex – A classic shopping destination
Sikh Temple & Johor Old Chinese Temple – Representing Johor Bahru’s diverse religious harmony
Persada International Convention Centre – A major event venue in Johor

Finally, as we arrived back at the hotel, the rain started to pour once again—our entire journey had been perfectly timed with the weather!

A Perfectly Timed Walking Tour!

From 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM, we explored Johor Bahru’s city center, uncovering hidden gems and local delights. The most amazing part? Every time we stopped, it rained; every time we walked, the rain stopped—it felt as if the weather had choreographed this journey for us!

If you’d like to experience this walking tour yourself, pick a morning, follow our route, and discover a different side of Johor Bahru.
